COURSE, RULES & FAQs

swim:

4 km (2×2000 m)

The swim takes place at Lake Hefner in Northwest Oklahoma City. This body of water, which is the water supply for Oklahoma City and is only swam in by the athletes of our event, enjoys an average temperature on race day of 72F.

BIKE:

120 km (1×120 km)

The bike course takes the Long Distance athletes out into the warm and humid air of the Oklahoma countryside. The course, some urban, but mostly rural, is a series of mildly undulating hills with the greatest challenge  being the strong country winds. Look for  bike course video link !

Run:

30km (3×10 km)

The run course, also staged on the flat and fast closed course of Lake Hefner, gives the athletes plenty of time to size up the competition as they cut through the warm fall breezes along the beautiful lake. run course video link !

Our race site, base venue and transition area are very spectator –friendly.

HISTORY

The first recorded triathlon was organized by the San Diego Track and Field Club and took place in San Diego on September 24, 1974. The race consisted of a 8.5km run, followed by a 8km cycle and a 0.5km swim in San Diego’s Mission Bay. A total of 46 athletes finished the race. Within a matter of years the sport of triathlon grew rapidly and became one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

In 1988 The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was intrigued by the sport’s growth and began discussions to include triathlon in the Olympic Games.

One year later, on April 1, 1989 The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded. A total of 30 National Federations attended the initial Congress and preparations for the Triathlon’s first World Championship.  At this meeting the Olympic distance was set to a 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycle and a 10 km run.

Today the International Triathlon Union has grown to include over 120 affiliated National Federations around the world.

The World Championship
The first World Championship took place in Avignon, France in August 1989 with more than 800 athletes from 40 countries competing.

Triathlon was officially added to the Olympics in 1994 but made its first Olympic debut in Sydney 2000.
